Tifoso dies after falling from the stands during a River Plate match; match is suspended

A fan has died after falling from the stands of the Monumental de Núñez, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during a River Plate match. The match against Defensa y Justicia, for the 19th round of the Argentine championship, was suspended approximately 25 minutes into the first half due to the incident.

“The Football Safety Commission and Club Atlético River Plate regret to announce that, in this afternoon’s match against Defesa y Justicia, a fan threw himself into the empty stands of Sívori Alta and died instantly. The medical service immediately arrived in the area of ​​the accident, as well as the police and various security bodies,” River Plate clarified in a statement.

The victim, according to River, is a man, Pablo Marcelo Serrano, a member and fan of the team. The club said the grandstand will be closed to obtain evidence that can contribute to the investigation.

Defensa y Justicia commented on the case shortly before River Plate released the statement. The host club posted the reason for suspending the duel on social media and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.

“Match suspended following the death of a River fan. We express our condolences to the family, the institution and all its supporters,” said Defensa y Justicia.

Fluminense have a match at the Monumental de Núnez scheduled for Wednesday for the Libertadores’ fifth round group stage.

The stadium has undergone recent renovations to expand capacity. When it reopened in February this year, more than 83,000 fans attended the Monumental.

The medical service immediately arrived at the scene of the accident, as well as the police and various security agencies.

The booths of Sivori Alta, where the deceased registered, were 90%. At the time of the crash there was no third party intervention. It was also ascertained that there was no situation of violence in or near the stands. After 30 minutes the stadium was completely evacuated.

The supervisory bodies and the Major Events Specialized Tax Unit, chaired by Dr. Celsa Ramírez, are acting and carrying out the pertinent investigations.

By order of the Public Prosecutor, the bleachers will be closed for 24 hours for the acquisition of evidence“.
