The surfer from São Paulo has won all the heats played so far; competition that is worth a place in Santiago-2023
Three times world champion, surfer Gabriel Medina continues with 100% success at the ISA Games, El Salvador. This Sunday (4), the São Paulo native advanced in his fourth consecutive moto. Thus, advanced to the fifth stage of the competition. In the sum of the two best marks, he got 14.76, behind only New Zealander Billy Stairmand, who got 15.07.
Instead, the Japanese Taichi Wakita (10.90) and the Moroccan Teva Bouchgua (7.03) go down to the repechage. In the next stage, the Brazilian Gabriel Medina will face the Japanese Reo Inaba, the Peruvian Miguel Tudela and the Indonesian Rio Waida.
In addition to Medina, this Sunday (04) three other Brazilian surfers fell into the water: Filipe Toledo, João Chianca and Luana Silva, but due to the repechage. Everyone won the heats. Tatiana Weston Webb and Silvana Lima will be back surfing this Monday (05), for the main tournament and repechage respectively.
The competition
The ISA is played in two groups: the main and the repechage. Whoever falls in the main stage, competes in the repechage. The two play-off champions face the two losers from the main tournament final for a place in the super final. Thus, whoever wins joins the champions of the main tournament for the grand finale that is worth the title of ISA Games 2023.
ISA Games distributes 8 spots for the Olympics, 4 for men and 4 for women, for Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. America, in turn, selects through the Pan-American, which will be held in Santiago at the end of the year. ISA, on the other hand, qualifies for the Pan American. The competition runs until next Wednesday (07) and brings together 297 surfers from 64 countries.
