Former US Vice President Mike Pence will seek the Republican Party nomination for the US presidency in 2024, according to a document filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
Reuters was unable to immediately authenticate the record on the FEC website.
Pence, 63, will announce his campaign in a video and speech Wednesday in Iowa, three sources familiar with the situation told Reuters last week.
Pence’s entry pits him against front-runner Donald Trump, whom he once staunchly supported but refused to defend when the former president sought to overturn the 2020 election results.
A staunch conservative, a former congressman and former Indiana governor, Pence has increasingly distanced himself from Trump, saying the former president’s encouragement to protesters who attacked the Capitol in January is in jeopardy.
Pence joins a growing field of Republican candidates that includes Trump, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Senator Tim Scott and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum also plans to enter the race on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with Burgum’s plans.
The number of candidates vying for the nomination worries many of Trump’s opponents within the party, who fear the anti-Trump vote could be split, which would hand the party’s nomination to the former president.
