BNDES expected to increase infrastructure lending to BRL 47 billion in 2023, says director

The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) is expected to lend 47 billion reais to the infrastructure sector this year, after having provided 42.2 billion last year, said Luciana Costa, the bank’s director, on Monday.

“This year, despite the high interest rate and the macroeconomic headwind, we will disburse 47 billion reais for infrastructure and energy or a little more,” said Costa, director of infrastructure, energy transition and climate change, at an event in Rio de Janeiro Janiero. The BNDES infrastructure area includes the energy segment.

The bank’s studies show that Brazil will need 3.7 trillion reais of investments over the next ten years for infrastructure, in view of the energy transition process and attention to sustainability.

Of this total, 525 billion reais should be allocated to expanding energy production and 1 trillion reais to the green hydrogen industry, as well as 263 billion reais to electromobility, such as electric buses, Costa said.
