Prince Harry will become the first high-ranking British royal to testify in court in more than a century when he appears on Tuesday in his lawsuit against a publisher whose titles he accuses of phone hacking and other illegal activities.
Harry, fifth in line to the throne, failed to appear as scheduled at London’s High Court on Monday, where he and more than 100 others are suing Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN), which publishes the Daily Mirror and Sunday newspapers Mirrors and Sunday People. , on allegations of widespread wrongdoing between 1991 and 2011.
King Charles’ youngest son will face hours of cross-examination on the witness stand by MGN attorney Andrew Green on Tuesday and Wednesday over 33 newspaper articles he says are based on illegally obtained information.
This will make him the first senior British royal to testify in 130 years.
The MGN trial began last month, with attorneys for Harry and the other plaintiffs seeking to show that the illegal information collection was done with the knowledge and approval of publishers and top executives.
Harry is one of four test cases and his specific claims are the focus of the first three days of this week.
However, Harry failed to turn up on Monday, having only left the US, where he now lives with his American wife Meghan, the night before for their daughter Lilibet’s birthday on Sunday.
