Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is set to formally announce his candidacy for the 2024 US presidency on Tuesday, joining a growing Republican camp led by Donald Trump.
Christie, who served as a consultant to Trump’s successful 2016 campaign, has since become a vehement critic of the former president over his false claims that the 2020 election was rigged.
A former federal prosecutor, Christie, 60, said he was the only potential rival with the skills and willingness to directly attack Trump.
But Christie’s hasn’t fared well in opinion polls so far. She garnered just 1% support from potential Republican voters in a Reuters/Ipsos poll in May, compared to 49% support for Trump and 19% support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Other Republicans looking to challenge President Joe Biden include former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Senator Tim Scott. Former Vice President Mike Pence is expected to participate in the race on Wednesday.
Christie ran for president in 2016, but ended her bid after a disappointing result in the New Hampshire primary and became the first senior figure in the party to back Trump.
He has since urged Republicans to repudiate Trump’s claims about the 2020 election and told reporters he will not vote for Trump in 2024 even if the former president wins the nomination.
