The premier assured that Italy is trying to facilitate the agreement with the IMF

The Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, visited Tunisia this Tuesday (6) and met the president of the African country, Kais Saied.

The head of the Italian government assured that Rome is working to facilitate an agreement between Tunis and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help Tunisia deal with its serious financial crisis.

“I spoke to the president about the efforts that a friendly country like Italy is making, in full respect of Tunisian sovereignty, to try to reach a positive conclusion for the agreement between Tunisia and the IMF, which will be fundamental for strengthening the Village”. Meloni said after meeting Saied.

The Prime Minister also commented that Italy is acting as a sort of “spokesperson” for Tunis in the European Union, with the aim of “increasing support in the fight against human trafficking and illegal immigration”.

After promising that she would return to Tunisia soon, but accompanied by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Meloni recalled that the two countries are “historically linked” and that “they must be able to cooperate together”.

“The stabilization of the political and security framework and the growth of democracy are essential for Tunisia, but also for Italy, above all in order to be able to achieve extraordinary potential from our point of view”, commented the premier.

The prime minister also stressed that he intends to speed up the approval of an aid package for the African country in the EU that revolves around $1.9 billion.

In addition to economic aid, the bilateral meeting between Meloni and Saied was also characterized by talks on migration. The Italian said the number of landings in the European nation “dipped significantly” in May.

“We have done an excellent job so far together with Tunisia. We believe that our common effort should be intensified, by strengthening collaboration with the Tunisian authorities in prevention activities, especially in the Sfax region, where the majority of irregular migrants come from” , he concluded. . .
