WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE ?

Harry Palmer, Anti-007

It’s hard to imagine a more famous British spy than James Bond. And if indeed, Agent 007 continues to fascinate the public with his adventures, shot in four corners of the world, with action-packed cocktails and incredible gadgets, another spy was successful in the 1960s: he’s Harry Palmer, Len’s protagonist. Dayton novels played five times by Michael Kane.

In more ways than one, Palmer is the antithesis of James Bond. More cold and procedural, the latter is a much more realistic secret agent that moves the world of John Le Carré’s novels more closely than that of Ian Fleming. Ironically, it was James Bond’s early producer Harry Salzman who released the first adaptation of Harry Palmer on screen, which aimed to convey exactly the opposite of Macho, the male spy archetype à la 007..

Harry Palmer is played by Michael Kane (left) and Joe Cole (right).

Another difference with James Bond, Harry Palmer had only one translator in the five films dedicated to him. It was Michael Kane who played the lead role in Ipcress in 1965, Immediate Danger, the first opus in the trilogy formed at my funeral in Berlin (1966) and Brain for a Billion Dollars (1967), and added thirty years later. The diptych films Midnight in St. Petersburg and the Beijing Express, as far as the original stories are concerned (and not adapted from the novels of Len Dayton).

That’s not to say that there is some pressure to accompany Joe Cole, who has been chosen as the successor to this legend of British cinema, Michael Kane to attribute his qualities to Harry Palmer. However, there is no doubt that the young actor, who has just seen the London gangs in the series, will be well able to perform this new modernized adaptation – but still faithful to the adventures of Harry Palmer towards novels!
