Season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy, currently airing every Wednesday night on TF1, introduced a new generation of interns to help the doctors at Gray Sloan Memorial after the internship program was shut down in the Season 18 finale.
Among them is Lucas Adams, played by Nico Terho, who was Derek and Amelia’s nephew. Following this surprise revelation at the end of the first episode, fans were immediately scrambling to find out the identity of the young man’s mother.
As we remember, Derek Shepherd has four sisters: Nancy (Embeth Davidz), Kathleen (Amy Acker), Liz (Nive Campbell) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). Upon arriving at Gray Sloan, Amelia was introduced as Lucas’ aunt, so fans were quick to rule out the possibility that she was his mother (although we’re not immune to a surprise turn of events from the writers). Only three left…
Nancy Shepherd, The most plausible hypothesis?
If they all have multiple children, all the clues scattered throughout season 19 suggest that Nancy is the most likely candidate. In Episode 3, Lucas confides in Simone that he is from Connecticut, where Nancy lived when we last saw her in Season 15.
The latter is also the oldest sister, which makes the possibility that she has a son in her thirties all the more plausible. And looking at Nancy’s story on Grey’s Anatomy, this theory may be confirmed.
He’s actually a gynecologist and obstetrician, and during his first appearance in season 3, he was openly critical of Derek and Meredith’s relationship and made no secret of his disdain for the young intern.
Given this data, it wouldn’t be surprising if he was strict with his children so that they would follow in his footsteps in medical school. Furthermore, when announcing the arrival of new characters, Lucas was described as “He is determined to prove himself as a surgeon, as many members of his family have done“.
Liz and Kathleen are still trying to be Lucas’ mother
Appearing in Season 9 after the plane crash, Liz went to the Gray Sloan Memorial to donate nerves in hopes of helping Derek repair his hand and thereby save his career as a surgeon.
But after two episodes in this passage, Nev Campbell did not return to the series. The actor doesn’t really have news, maybe he will appear in the 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy, which has already been ordered by ABC. However, Sidney Prescott’s interpreter in the Scream saga seems to be the least likely hypothesis.
So the final possibility is Kathleen, played by Amy Acker (Angel), who appeared one and only in the season 15 episode “Good Shepherd,” in which the sisters meet for a very tense dinner.
Kathleen seems to be the cruelest of the siblings, especially when it comes to Amelia and her drug addiction. But as with Liz and Nancy, we don’t know much about her character. Her very judgmental demeanor still makes her a good candidate to mother Lucas, describing the young intern as “The black sheep of the family“.
Of course, these hints that seem to point to Nancy Shepherd may have been given by the writers to mislead fans. Let’s hope the writers answer this question in the 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy, which is expected to arrive in the United States in early 2024.
Meanwhile, catch Grey’s Anatomy season 19 episode two every Wednesday from 9.10pm on TF1. Seasons 1 through 18 are available in their entirety on Disney+.
