Like many other directors—Nicolas Winding Refney for Drive, for example—Edgar Wright cites Walter Hill’s The Driver as one of his film’s main influences. And the director of the film received a real pleasure from the fans, inviting Hill to the project and giving his voice in the role of a translator at the end of the film.
Four years before principal photography began, Edgar Wright and editor Paul McLees compiled a playlist of over 30 tracks inspired by the film’s script. Lead actor Ansel Elgorty immediately recognized the unique nature of the project. He says: “I was given the script on an iPad that contained little emoticons in the colors of the film that you could click on to hear music that accompanied the scenes. Music was the engine of the script, as it is in the film.“
For the heist scenes, the director called on technical consultant Joe Loya, who was convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison for bank robbery in the early 1990s.
