Fluminense lose to River Plate in Argentina but remain key leaders in the Libertadores
In a crowded Monumental de Nuñez – with an estimated 86,000 fans – Fluminense ended up suffering their second defeat in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. Against River Plate, the Brazilian team lost 2-0 on Wednesday night for the fifth round. Despite the setback, Fluminense continue to lead Group D, with nine points, but missed out on the chance to qualify early for the round of 16.
It was the second defeat for Fernando Diniz’s team, who fell 1-0 with the reserves against The Strongest-BOL in the last round. In the sixth and final round, Fluminense will play at home against Sporting-Cristal (PER ) and it is only up to him to confirm the vacancy and first position. River Plate remained alive, with seven points and now it’s their turn to advance to the round of 16, because in the last round they will receive The Strongest.
Inter takes Nacional’s draw at the end and misses the early qualification in the Libertadores
Internacional came close to securing early qualification for the last 16 of the Libertadores this Wednesday night, at the Parque Central stadium in Montevideo, but they allowed Nacional to look for a 1-1 draw in the final stretch of the game and will have to wait the last round of the group stage to define their future. After opening the scoring with a good play by Alan Patrick, Mano Menezes’ team saw Damiani score, with a header, in the 43rd minute of the second half.
With nine points gained after two wins and three draws, the team from Rio Grande do Sul occupies the leadership of Group B, and can still be overtaken by Independiente de Medellín, who are in third place, with seven points, but will still go to on the field for the penultimate round, on Thursday, in a duel with the eliminated Metropolitanos. Independiente will be Inter’s opponent in the last match of the first phase, scheduled for 28 June, in Beira-Rio. Nacional, second with eight points, makes the final round against Metropolitanos.
