President Joe Biden on Thursday warned of “ugly” attacks by “hysterical” people targeting LGBTQ+ Americans as he announced new measures aimed at curbing book bans and the rise in hate crimes.
“We have some hysterical and, I would say, biased people” involved in the attack on the LGBTQ public, Biden said.
“It’s a call to fear and it’s a totally, completely unwarranted and ugly call,” she said.
Biden has also criticized a flurry of Republican bills targeting the community and, in particular, transgender youth.
“These are our children, these are our neighbors. It’s cruel, it’s insensitive. They’re not other people’s children, they’re all our children,” he told reporters.
The president was scheduled to address the matter at a White House party Thursday night, but the event was postponed to Saturday due to smoke from wildfires in Canada.
Biden also announced new measures on Thursday to help LGBTQ schools and children address book bans, threats of fights at community centers, improve access to health care for transgender youth, and urged Congress to pass the Equality Act. .
“LGBTQ Americans, especially children, you are loved, you are listened to, and this administration stands by you,” Biden said. “I’m serious. We won’t budge for a second.”
