The Idol: ‘I Sacrificed My Health,’ The Weeknd Talks About Difficult Series Production

Singer The Weeknd, known for his many pop hits and impressive concerts, enters the world of series with The Idol, a fiction he produces, co-writes and in which he plays the second lead. He plays Tedro, a sinister nightclub boss who becomes his influence on a young pop star named Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp.

Presented out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the program – directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson – drew ire from critics who praised the series. “Wife“, “empty” and sensational. Long before its release, The Idol was destined to face controversy as a result of its chaotic production.

While filming was well underway, director Amy Semitz left the series, unhappy with the script changes. As a result, Sam Levinson returned most of the scenes. In Interview with W MagazineThe Weeknd confided in these many changes that he’s staunchly guarded:

I wanted to make sure I came up with the best version of what we were doing. Bringing back The Idol was a challenge and, truthfully, I sacrificed my health and my home to make it work. Even if the show comes out and it’s absolutely terrible, I still know I did my best. And from what I’ve seen, the series is great.”

The singer insists and specifies that he wanted to take his time: “Cinema and television are new creative muscles for me. I don’t release my music until I know it’s good. Why would it be any different here?“He follows:”My secret is that I don’t panic. When everyone around me is worried, I stay upright. But when I lost my voice, I panicked. I had to take a break and think about both The Weeknd and Tedros’ character.”

Idol is available on Prime Video with Warner Pass.
