Four children rescued alive 40 days after plane crash in Colombia

Preliminary information indicates that the children got off the plane and started walking for help in the middle of the jungle.

Four indigenous children were rescued alive this Friday 9, in the jungles of southeast Colombia, 39 days after the small single-engine plane they were traveling in crashedending a search by air, land and river, two senior military officials told Reuters.

The minors were rescued by Army troops on the border between the departments of Caquetá and Guaviare, near the area where the Cessna 206 plane crashed, which was flying between Araracuara and the city of San José del Guaviare.

“They’re alive, they’re alive, we’ve found them”a senior military source familiar with the rescue operation told Reuters.

The aircraft, with seven occupants, declared a state of emergency on the morning of 1 May, due to an apparent engine failure.

The three adults who were on the plane, including the pilot, died, and their bodies were found inside the plane while the four youngest, aged 13, 9 and 4, plus a 12-month-old baby, survived the crash.

Preliminary information from the Military Forces, who coordinated rescue efforts constantly despite the bad weather, indicate that the children got off the plane and started walking in the middle of the jungle looking for help.

The rescuers, who made use of the support of trained search and rescue dogs, found traces of fruit that the children ate to survive, as well as makeshift shelters made of vegetation in the middle of the jungle.

Air Force and Army aircraft and helicopters took part in the search and rescue operations.
