Inter were defeated by Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League final. After the match, Nerazzurri forward Romelu Lukaku was subjected to racial abuse on his social networks.
Fans sent abusive racist messages to the Belgian, using monkey emojis. One of them wrote “You’re a fucking cotton picker,” referring to the enslaved black people who were forced into this job. Entered in the 11th minute of the second phase, Lukaku proved to be the villain of the match wasting Inter’s first chance, stopping on Ederson, and disturbing a shot by Dimarco that would have gone on goal.
During the semi-final of the Coppa Italia, Romelu had already been the target of the same problem. Against Juventus, Inter lost with minimum points, but in extra time the Brazilian defender Bremer committed a penalty. Before, during and after taking the kick, Lukaku heard Old Lady fans making monkey sounds and imitations, responding to them in their celebration. In the Champions League final, however, luck was not the same. In the 23rd minute of the second half, Spanish defensive midfielder Rodri scored City’s title goal, which fulfilled the dream of winning the European tournament for the first time in its history and completed the Triple Crown.
