More Spider-Man! While the feature film Across the Spider-Verse (released May 31) is a hit at the box office, having already collected more than $313 million worldwide, here comes a new short film Spider-Man Within – A Spider-Verse Story focused on. The Adventures of Miles Morales.
This movie was produced by Sony Animation through the program Leading and Empowering New Historians (LENS), which aims to include talent from an underrepresented diversity. As a result of several months of work, this short film was created simultaneously with the filming of Spider-Verse.
The Annecy Festival welcomed director Jarrell Dampier, screenwriter Khaila Amazani (screenwriter), VFX supervisor Clara Chan (VFX supervisor) and animation supervisor Joe Darko for the world premiere screening of Spider-Man Within, a short film in which Miles Morales sees the brunt of it. Responsibilities.
“Transparency is my superpower”
“We had the full volume of The Spider-Verse at our disposal, but I had an idea to make a movie that only takes place in Morales’ living room (laughs).” Jarelle Dampier, former storyboard artist (Justice League, Invicible), confides that this is the first achievement.
Despite the large repertoire of characters and the endless possibilities offered by the multiverse, the latter wanted to use the story of Miles Morales to evoke the topic of mental illness:
Many of us have had a hard time since prison, and I especially wanted to talk about my struggle with anxiety (…) Transparency is my real superpower, I don’t know how to pretend to be someone else.
In Spider-Man Within, Miles Morales faces a new shadow enemy, a projection of himself or rather his anxiety, which takes the form of a menacing shadow, then a giant spider.
Anecdotally, one of the spiders in the film is the exact same one that bit Miles in the first (and is the subject of a major reveal in Across the Spider-Verse).
Inspired by Japanese and American horror films
“Do you have a few hours? Because I’ll be able to do my dick.” The film’s screenwriter, Khaila Amazani, was asked by an audience member about its chilling influence.
The latter explains that he wanted to find a point of convergence between American and Japanese horror films, specifically mentioning Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners or Takashi Miike’s Japanese Electroshock Audition and Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Kuro.
Father-son relationship is also one of the main themes of the short film. The young boy’s father himself, Jarrel Dampier, wanted to emphasize the importance of a child having a parent to lean on. “Sometimes as a parent you hurt yourself and your child hurts you” The director summarizes with a lot of humor.
“Across the Spider-Verse stars Rio as Miles’ mother. So we thought it would be important to show Jefferson in this story.” Emphasizes in turn Khaila Amazani. “It’s rare in a movie to have a conversation like that between two men, let alone two black people.”
Unfortunately, Spider-Man fans will have to wait until they can hope to see this film, which currently has no release date of any kind. “I honestly don’t know, but expect me to let you know as soon as I know more” He answers with all the transparency that characterizes him Jarrel Dampier
