According to NASA, this science fiction movie is the least realistic

At a 2011 conference at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, NASA experts shared a list of science fiction movies they rated as the most realistic and the least realistic. From their works, it is clear that the 2012 film, released in 2009 and directed by Roland Emmerich, is the dumbest of the SF films.

It should be remembered that this ranking took place in a very specific context. At the time, in 2011, many people were convinced that 2012 would be the end of the world, especially based on the theory in Emmerich’s film. In this feature film, the Mayan calendar predicts the destruction of the earth on December 21, 2012, the earth’s core begins to heat up in an unusual way and earthquakes erupt everywhere.

As 2012 approached, NASA began receiving mass emails from people concerned about the end of the world predicted in the film, such as: Trust me Donald Yeomans, then a solar system dynamics specialist at NASA:

“The agency receives so many questions from people who are scared about the end of the world in 2012 that we had to launch a site specifically dedicated to dispelling this myth. This is an unprecedented decision.”

NASA’s decision to host Emmerich’s film was no doubt guided by this context of instability and public reassurance.

Least realistic science fiction movies (as of 2011):

1. 2012 year (2009)

2. Fusion (2003)

3. Armageddon (1998)

4. Volcano (1997)

Fragment from Armageddon

Most realistic science fiction films (as of 2011):

But NASA also knows how to identify the most compelling movies Hollywood has to offer:

1. Welcome to Gattaca (1997)

2. Contact (1997)

3. Metropolis (1927)

4. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

5. Woman in the Moon (1929)

6. A Thing From Another World (1951)

7. Jurassic Park (1993)

Would NASA make this classification today? Will we see Blade Runner 2049, Interstellar, Ex Machina, Alone on Mars or Ready Player One? What would be the least realistic sci-fi films on the post-2011 list? Your keyboards!
