The national day of mourning for the death of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, a victim of chronic leukemia at the age of 86, was broadcast like a football match with choirs sung in front of the Milan Cathedral, the stage for the funeral of the tycoon.
In a packed Piazza del Duomo, Berlusconi fans began chanting “He who doesn’t jump is a communist,” paraphrasing a chorus common in stadiums across the country.
The square in front of the cathedral is invaded by fans of the former Prime Minister, including hundreds of fans of Milan, a club that experienced its golden age under the guidance of the “Cavaliere”, and of Monza, the team bought by Berlusconi in 2018.
You can see many flags and banners of the two teams, as well as of Força Italia (FI), a party founded and chaired by the former premier until the day of his death.
Inside the cathedral the atmosphere is solemn, with the presence of the main political leaders of the country, such as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, President Sergio Mattarella and former Prime Ministers Mario Monti, Matteo Renzi, Paolo Gentiloni and Mario Draghi.
Also present were Berlusconi’s second wife, Veronica Lario, from whom he had a troubled divorce, and his ex-girlfriend Francesca Pascale. Berlusconi’s last companion, Marta Fascina, is next to the tycoon’s five children: Marina, Pier Silvio, Barbara, Eleonora and Luigi.
The coffin arrived at the church to applause and covered with red and white roses. .
