The city of Caxias do Sul (RS) tested, this Wednesday (14), a Unprecedented bus that will work without a human driver. The prototype is a autonomous minibusa project born from the partnership between the Marcopolo bus manufacturer and five start-ups.

The vehicle was retrofitted with a automation system: Electric modules control steering, brakes, throttle and shifting.

As Brazilian legislation does not yet allow autonomous vehicles to circulate on public roads, the Serra Gaúcha project does not yet have a date to start commercial production.

How does it work?

The minibus had traditional production, however, the systems were adapted so that it could work autonomously. Sensors have been installed in the vehicle capable of mapping the surrounding environment, registering the presence of other vehicles and pedestrians crossing the road.

The information captured by the sensors is sent to the artificial intelligence system located inside the vehicle.

Control of the vehicle can be activated from a push button, allowing the safety supervisor to take over the minibus’ controls and generate an emergency stop if required.

The safety device that completely shuts down the autonomous system and locks the vehicle’s brake.

One button allows the safety supervisor to take control of the vehicle and generate an emergency stop of the vehicle, completely shutting down the autonomous system and locking the vehicle’s brake. The system is built using hardwire and does not depend on the internet to function.

From now on, new tests will be carried out, as stated by the CEO of Lume, one of the start-ups participating in the project, Ranik Guidolini, in an interview with RBS TV, affiliate of Rede Globo.

“We have to put our system through extensive testing to ensure that every possible situation has been handled and that even if there isn’t a situation that the vehicle encounters, it can’t handle it.”
