Marko Rupnik founded the school responsible for mosaics in Aparecida
The Society of Jesus, the order of origin of Pope Francis, announced this Thursday (15) the expulsion of the Slovenian priest Marko Rupnik, accused of sexual abuse.
Icon of contemporary sacred art, the Jesuit is the founder of the Centro de Arte Espiritual Aletti, the school responsible for the new mosaic decoration of the facade of the National Shrine of Aparecida, the main Catholic temple in Brazil.
“We inform you with a sorrowful heart that, on June 9, 2023, the Superior General [Arturo Sosa Abascal] dismissed Father Marko Ivan Rupnik from the Society of Jesus. This was done in accordance with canon law, due to his stubborn refusal to observe the vow of obedience”, reads a note from the Jesuit order.
Several nuns accuse Rupnik of sexual, psychological and power abuse, and the head of investigations against him at the Society of Jesus, Johan Verschueren, said that the degree of credibility of the allegations is “very high”.
“We forced Marko Rupnik to change communities and accept a new mission, in which we offered him one last chance as a Jesuit to settle accounts with his past and enter the path of truth. Faced with Marko Rupnik’s repeated refusal to obey this order, we were left with only one solution: his removal from the Society of Jesus,” said Verschueren.
The Slovenian received the expulsion decree last Wednesday (14) and has 30 days from that date to present an appeal.
