Before he finds it in the fourth Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland goes through the box set of The Crowded Room, a psychological thriller in ten episodes available on Apple TV+.
Created and co-written by Akiva Goldsman (Batman & Robin, Robot Me, The Da Vinci Code, The Dark Tower) and directed by Cornell Mundruzzo (Woman Pieces, Jupiter’s Moon), Tom Holland stars as Danny Sullivan, a young man. A man was arrested in 1979 after participating in a shooting in New York.
Based on a series of interrogations led by the intriguing Ria Goodwin, this thriller reveals Danny’s life, from the mysterious elements of his past that shaped him to the twists and turns that lead him to a life-changing revelation.
A true story that also inspired Split!
You should know that the character of Tom Holland is inspired by a person who really existed. Born in 1955, William Stanley Milligan, aka Billy Milligan, was at the center of a court case in Ohio in the late 1970s. After committing several crimes, including armed robbery, he was arrested for three counts of rape on the Ohio State University campus.
Also known as the “Campus Bully,” Billy Milligan has been widely publicized, especially for his defense, which his lawyers have claimed. The latter confessed to the crime after extensive psychological examinations.
The first doctor, Dr. Willis Driscoll, confirms that he is suffering from acute schizophrenia, but psychologist Dorothy Turner diagnoses him with dissociative identity disorder.
Gary Schweikart and Judy Stevenson, Billy Milligan’s attorneys, explained that his two alternate personalities committed the crime without Milligan’s knowledge of them. As a result, he was interned “until he regained consciousness.”
Billy Milligan is the first person with the disorder to use it as a defense at trial, but he is also the first person with the disorder to be acquitted of a major crime for this reason.
After his acquittal, Billy Milligan spent more than ten years in various mental hospitals, where he had about 10 different personalities. On December 12, 2014, at the age of 59, he died of cancer in a nursing home in Columbus, Ohio.
Billy Milligan was the subject of a book called The Thousand and One Lives of Billy Milligan by Daniel Casey, published in 1981. It also inspired the character played by James McAvoy in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and is now the main inspiration for Tom Holland’s character in The Crowded Room.
The first four episodes of The Crowded Room are available on Apple TV+, via the paid platform or for free via myCANAL. The rest of the series will be available one episode per week.
