Hamilton returns to the top in Canada, with Red Bull stagnating

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in an extended second practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday, as rain and technical problems kept the mighty Red Bull away from the front spots.

Building on the momentum of his double podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, Hamilton set the fastest lap, in 1min13s718, at the island circuit where he took the first of his 103 race wins, a record for the category, in 2007. won the Canadian Grand Prix seven times.

Immediately behind the seven-time world champion, his teammate George Russell appeared, only 0s027 slower.

The dominant Red Bulls, who have won all seven races this season, did not shine on an overcast day, with Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen in sixth and Sergio Pérez in eighth.

While the results from Mercedes and Ferrari, with Carlos Sainz third and Charles Leclerc fifth, are promising, it is still too early to tell whether they will be able to close the gap to Red Bull by next Sunday’s race.

It looked as if the Red Bulls were preparing for a final sprint, but any hope of grabbing the top positions in qualifying was dashed by a heavy downpour that hit the circuit in the closing minutes.
