What would the Avengers have been like in the 90s? AI imagines the cast; I wait!

The Avengers franchise, from Marvel studios, made cinema history in 2012. Since then, there have been four films and billions of dollars at the worldwide box office. But what if these films were made in the 90s? It’s what an AI (artificial intelligence), shall we say, imagined.

In fact, this was thought up by Reddit user CPTCHARLESTON (@phate2000). Through Midjourney (that platform with AI capable of generating images) – and perhaps inspired by the series “What if…?” from Marvel – he chose a sort of “90s Avengers”.

Aside from different (better, maybe?) visual effects, the cast would be different this season. After all, the “setup” of Hollywood – stars and renegades alike – in the 1990s was very different from the first decade of the 21st century.

Avengers in the 90s

Check out the AI-generated images of Reddit users’ ideas about an Avengers team straight from the ’90s below:

Robert Downey Jr. he seems born to play the genius billionaire philanthropist playboy of the MCU. But do an exercise in detachment here. Tom Cruise rocked American cinema in the 80s and 90s when he starred in productions such as Top Gun: Indomitable Aces (1986) and Mission Impossible (1996).

Thus, it makes sense to imagine him as one of the main characters – for some, the main one – of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Would work.

Bruce Willis as Captain America in the 90s Avengers

Another actor who had it all in the 90s and had a military edge was Bruce Willis. Therefore, it makes sense to imagine him as Marvel’s super soldier (especially if you take into account the performance of him in the first Die Hard, in 1988). Musculature and presence are not lacking. Maybe just hair. But even Chris Evans couldn’t help it.

Montage of images of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Bruce Banner and the Hulk in the 90's Avengers

In an age where creating a giant, muscular CGI man would be extremely difficult, it makes sense to cast a man who is already gigantic and muscular in the real world. This is what they did in the 1977 film “The Incredible Hulk”, for example. Only in this feature film was the character played by two actors: Bill Bixby was Bruce Banner, while Lou Ferrigno was the muscular alter ego of the scientist.

Reddit user’s idea to adapt the character to the big screen in the 90s was to cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as both Banner and Hulk. He would surely have capitalized on the excitement surrounding the actor at the time, due to the Terminator franchise.

Brad Pitt as Thor in the 90s Avengers

Nowadays, you can’t think of Thor without imagining the face – and body, of course – of actor Chris Hemsworth. But in the 90s Brad Pitt’s face (and body, of course) would fit perfectly into the Norse god archetype, wouldn’t it? The star of Fight Club (1999) and Seven: The Seven Deadly Crimes (1995) would do well in the role, no doubt.

Milla Jovovich as Black Widow in 90's Avengers

From the Resident Evil franchise to Avengers would be a short leap for Milla Jovovich. Known primarily for her portrayal of Alice, the actress swam in her arm when she played the Shield spy. While Scarlett Johansson was a very right choice for Marvel studios to bring the character to life on the big screen, Milla wouldn’t be far behind.

Michael J. Fox as Hawkeye in the 1990s Avengers

He was a character that didn’t promise anything, but Jeremy Renner delivered everything on paper. But thinking about the Avengers of the 90s, this mission could be entrusted to Michael J. Fox. It would be an opportunity for the actor to play a more adult character in the film, having solidified himself in the Back to the Future franchise as teenager Marty McFly. It would produce an interesting experience for both the artist and the audience.

Will Smith as Black Panther in the 90s Avengers

Will Smith collects hits from the 90s. Just to name a few: Um Maluco no Pedaço (1990), Os Bad Boys (1995) and MIB: Men in Black (1997). So, wouldn’t it be crazy to imagine the actor taking on the mantle of protector of Wakanda (and one of the badass Avengers on the team, perhaps?).

Montage with images of Brendan Fraser as Peter Quill in the 90's Avengers

To close, comes this who is not exactly an Avenger, but a very important figure for the MCU. Brendan Fraser had his “comeback” to the Hollywood spotlight recently, with A Baleia (2022), but he is a personality with a lot of 90s energy.

At that time, he starred in films such as The Mummy (1999), George, King of the Forest (1997) and Code of Honor (1992). His comedic timing, silly manner, and then-great physique would fit – and very much – the Peter Quill archetype, among both the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers.
