Walking Dead: How much is the series Dead City with Maggie and Negan worth?

What are you doing?

A few years after the events of Commonwealth, Maggie and Negan travel to a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long cut off from the mainland. The ruined city is inhabited by the dead and the inhabitants who have turned New York into an anarchic world full of terror.

Never change a winning team. Months after the finale of The Walking Dead aired, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan return as Negan and Maggie Kahn, an unlikely duo, as the young woman visually hates her husband Glenn’s killer.

Lauren Cohan excels in the role of action heroine, a worthy successor to Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor, her fellow Jeffrey Dean Morgan finds the perfect balance of seductiveness and disturbing presence to restore Negan to his true letters of nobility.

The main villain of the series is a man named Croat (Ċ½eljko Ivanek). A former soldier of Negan’s during the Sanctuary, the latter narrowly escaped death; His last meeting with the leader of the Savior cost him.

Also franchise newcomer Gaius Charles lends his chops to Pearly Armstrong, the marshal hot on Negan’s heels. A follower of speedy justice, the lawyer will not shy away from any danger to fulfill his mission.

Produced by Scott M. From Gimple, the former showrunner of The Walking Dead and now in charge of the franchise, Dead City was created by screenwriter Eli Jorne, who has already written several episodes of the horror series.

Is it worth checking out?

When it was announced that a Maggie and Negan-centric spinoff of The Walking Dead was coming, few fans of the franchise were enthusiastic.

It must be said that most have already had to resort to violence to finish the last seasons of the program, and this multiple continuation of the franchise has been holding its breath for a long time, so it was not good.

and still! Of course, because it didn’t feel the pressure of meeting public expectations, The Walking Dead: Dead City is, against all odds, a compassionate and effective success. A pleasant surprise that we did not expect. But then, not really!

Dead City’s first good idea is its format: six 45-minute episodes (rather than the excruciating platforming episodes that now run to 55 minutes or more). While sixteen episodes in each season of The Walking Dead has forced the show to offer “filler” episodes, its spin-off chooses to cut to the chase.

Thus, the plot wastes no time in introducing unnecessary secondary characters. This mother’s hunt for her kidnapped son and the man in his past works very well.

Halfway between horror and action, Dead City heralds 80s genre cinema, more specifically John Carpenter’s films. While the overall plot of City of the Dead is reminiscent of 1997 New York, the series’ Western overtones also bring to mind Assault on Central 13 and Vampires.

The franchise is coming back from the dead

Dead City ticks almost all the boxes for effective entertainment: a frenetic pace punctuated by delightfully scary scenes (Negan’s scene and “rain of blood”namely) without forgetting the presence of a charismatic villain in the Croat’s personality. It’s also topped with a good dose of winks and flashbacks aimed at the franchise’s most die-hard fans.

The frame change of the series is perfectly mastered. While The Walking Dead was set in the countryside, Dead City is set in Manhattan. The skyscrapers of New York create a disturbing atmosphere and the city is gradually transformed into an open prison.

Dead City is a success that now promises similar results for the next spin-offs of the franchise, Daryl Dixon with Norman Reedus (expected this year) and the mini-series Rick and Michonne (broadcast in 2024).

The example of Dead City proves that by focusing on a few characters in the story, the new production of Walking Dead has the potential to regain the quality of the first seasons of the terrible program.

Either way, the spin-off will succeed in the unlikely if it allows the franchise to once again spark curiosity and enthusiasm!

You can watch all six episodes of Walking Dead: Dead City starting Monday, June 19 exclusively on OCS Choc and on demand on the OCS platform!
