The last years of his life gradually passed, in 1996, in a nursing home, the centenarian Paul Edgecombe decided to write his memoirs and tell about the many traumas that his former profession left him. In the 1930s, he served as warden at Cold Mountain Penitentiary, and more specifically worked in Block E, nicknamed “The Green Line,” where death row inmates spent their final days before execution.
Among his reminiscences, Edgecombe particularly recalls his meeting with the mysterious John Coffey, a colossus with a sincere air, who was nevertheless accused of a gruesome murder and sentenced to death. The latter seemed to be hiding strange magical powers during the interviews.
A month and a half ago, it was the unforgettable Forrest Gump, which, according to AlloCiné’s audience ratings, was the best feature film you can find on Netflix. But after the Robert Zemeckis feature left the platform on April 30, it’s another well-known Tom Hanks-led film that’s now in the top spot.
With an average of 4,572 out of 5 stars, this is the Green Line. Much grittier and darker than Forrest Gump, this fantasy-tinged drama centered on death row inmates is the second feature from Frank Darabont, also known as the original showrunner of The Walking Series. Dead.
Five years after the excellent The Evades, Darabont tackles another prison story, again adapted from the famous Stephen King original work. The latter also provided the story to the director before he started writing, so the script developed parallel to the serialized novel.
“(runaways) was (…) A more optimistic story. It’s close to my weirdest fairy tales.”Stephen King said of the Green Line. “But there is also the idea that the human spirit can overcome hardships and even be stimulated by them.”

A four-time Oscar nominee, The Green Line struck its audience first and foremost with the strength of its central theme and the intense emotion it exudes. The fate was made possible thanks to the great talent of its main performers, led by A Tom Hanks The masterful but also the late Michael Clarke Duncan, whose performance will no doubt make you pull out the tissues.
Still, according to AlloCiné’s viewer notes, The Green Line remains the best film adaptation of a Stephen King novel to date, followed by The Evades and The Shining.
