What if America’s biggest series hit Netflix? This could be a form of partnership that is currently being discussed between platform leaders and Warner Bros. among the group’s leadership. Discovery, in particular, the owners of the catalog of the American cable channel HBO.
our colleagues Deadline Reveal the start of discussions to transfer the rights to the controversial series to Netflix. Other yet-to-be-named series are also being mentioned by the two parties, although talks between Netflix and HBO have yet to lead to a formal deal.
The signing of this partnership involves a non-exclusive transfer of rights, which will allow the series to remain in the United States on the Max platform (formerly HBO Max) and likely in France on Amazon Prime Video, via Warner Pass.
The formalization of this deal will be a first, as HBO has never agreed to transfer the rights to its productions to a competing streaming platform (its agreement with OCS predates the official launch of Warner Pass in France).
So will the next few weeks tell us whether prestige series of the caliber of Sex & the City, The Sopranos – or even Game of Thrones – will soon join the catalog of the Netflix platform?
HBO series currently in circulation (such as House of Dragons and The Last of Us, but also the upcoming Harry Potter reboot) should not be affected by this partnership.
