The summer movie season has already begun and it is already flying. In terms of streaming, no action movie has been quite like Sam Hargrave’s Tyler Rake 2 .
The sequel to the 2020 blockbuster, which again stars Chris Hemsworth as the villainous Tyler Rake, landed on the platform last weekend. And today, via Netflix, we learn that Tyler Rake 2 made the platform’s biggest opening weekend of 2023.
According to the streamer, the film was viewed more than 42.8 million times in the first three days of its release. That brings its total viewing time to 88 million hours worldwide, which logically puts it in the top 10 most popular English-language movies this week.
And that means Chris Hemsworth is ahead of Jennifer Lopez, as his action film The Mother, released last month, topped the 2023 list.
As if that wasn’t enough, Tyler Rake 2 was more than Glass Onion, Netflix’s huge hit last year, which opened with 82.14 million hours watched.
However, this second opus comes in behind The Gray Man, which surpassed it on the post with 88.55 million hours watched. Starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, the film is also an action flick, straight from the magic box of producers Tyler Rake, Joe and Anthony Russo.
Why is Tyler Rake 2 such a hit?
There are many reasons why Tyler Rake’s sequel got off to a flying start. The support of the Russo Brothers, the fact that the first film is a super effective action thriller, and the question of how Tyler Rake survived the original are just a few key points.
However, the main reason this sequel breaks the bank is that Tyler Rake 2 takes everything that was explosive and successful about the first film to elevate it and get the adrenaline pumping even more.
It’s an understatement to say that the action is even crazier in this sequel. From the hyper-smooth direction, to the ultra-violent sequences, to the pacing of the story, the first hour fans were kept hooked throughout the film.
The famous 21 minutes of action-packed footage will especially go down as one of the most spectacular achievements in the history of the genre. And the fact that most of it was shot without special effects and that the actors performed their stunts themselves certainly contributes to the wow effect generated by this audacity.
It should be noted that Netflix believes so much in its franchise that the platform did not wait to announce these impressive figures the day after the release of Tyler Rake 3 during the Tudum event in Sao Paulo.
The announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the end of Tyler Rake 2 clearly leaves the door open for a sequel to the mysterious character played by Idris Elba, whose involvement was kept under wraps until the very last moment.
Additionally, Golshifteh Farahani, who plays Nick Khan, Tyler’s friend and sidekick, told us a few days ago that Netflix is considering a spin-off centered around his character. If there is no official command yet, the script already exists!
