Big Tech sent an email to several users informing them that the album archive will be deleted; Google is finishing backing up old services
If you recently received an email from Google informing you that your photo album archive is about to be deleted, please stay calm. Big Tech is ending support for Album Archive, backing up images from older and defunct services, like Picasa and Hangout. Users can save the old photo album until July 18th.
As explained by Google on its official website, images present only in the Album Archive it will be removed on July 19th. When you enter the photo service, you will see a message that all displayed images will be deleted. The album archive contains photos of the extinct Picasa, Hangout and possibly even Google Plus — we can’t confirm here because hardly anyone remembers it, much less used it.
Images from the album archive can be downloaded with Takeout
If you have photos in your Album Archive, you can download them using Google Takeout, Google’s program for retrieving user-saved files. Among the album archive images are some Hangout files, pre-2018 Gmail background photos, and “rare cases” of small thumbnails, according to Big tech.
If you’ve ever used Blogger, photos uploaded to the service it may be in the album archive. In the tests carried out from my personal account, only the old Blogger and Hangout images are available.

However, most of the Hangout photos could be saved in Google Chat. After shutting down the first one, the company transitioned several contents to its replacement.
And don’t worry: no photos or videos located in Google Photos (or Drive) will be affected by the end of the album archive. And since the Album Archive contains very old photos, maybe it’s even better to lose some memories — for example those photos from years ago, when we wore looks we’d be ashamed of today.
