Netflix, Sony, HBO and Universal have all agreed to cancel their traditional panels at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, according to the report. Variety. The news comes shortly after Marvel Studios also announced they will not be attending the event, one of the largest and most popular entertainment conventions in the world.
The absence of platforms and studios is due to the pause of several productions with the ongoing writers’ strike. In Marvel’s case, the hiatus has left the studio with no news and with a noticeably impacted schedule.
Another main point considered by the companies is the possibility that the actors’ union (SAG-AFTRA) will also start a shutdown, as artists fear their contracts will be terminated due to the disruptions. This would leave the studios without actors for the conventions (which is probably why they are already canceling their main panels, presented in Hall H). With the writers’ strike, this year’s panels have already lost writers and showrunners.
SAG-AFTRA may order a walkout anytime after the current contract with Hollywood studios expires on June 30. In short, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has until that date to enter into an agreement with the Actors Guild.
San Diego Comic-Con 2023 will take place between July 20 and 23.
Other studios like Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Pictures, NBC, and Amazon have yet to officially comment on their attendance at SDCC 2023. Most are awaiting definitions to announce a decision.
It’s worth noting that even by canceling major panels in Hall H, platforms can still do smaller presentations without major announcements. Marvel, for example, will still be at the event, but with a more modest dedicated booth.
