Bolsonaro’s siege of the TSE puts nearly 70 people at risk of ineligibility

The ongoing trial in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is not the only one threatening to render former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) ineligible. 15 other lawsuits have already been filed against him in the Electoral Tribunal and are not limited to the former chief executive, putting at risk the political rights of at least 68 other people, in addition to those responsible for yet-to-be-identified Twitter accounts.

Military, politicians, influencers, journalists and children of the former president are on the list of suspects in the various trials, which investigate attacks on the electoral system and the spread of fake news. The actions do not yet have a deadline to be tried, but, if convicted, these people would face the same penalty that Bolsonaro can face in the current TSE trial: impeachment of political rights for eight years.

MUSICIAN

Among the actions weighing against the former president and his allies, there is the one investigating the massive shooting of false content on several social network profiles against the campaign of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in last year’s elections. In total, 48 people are under investigation for alleged misuse of the media, abuse of political power and abuse of economic power.

Among the targets are the former president’s three eldest sons: Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), Councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicanos-RJ) and Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), as well as musician Roger Moreira, parliamentarians and journalists.

Another lawsuit brought by Lula’s justice coalition blames Bolsonaro and his supporters for trying to delegitimize Brazil’s electoral process. “The request concerns acts and declarations that took place before the registration of the candidacy, during the electoral period, on the date of the ballot and after the publication of the results certifying the victory of the candidate of the author’s coalition”, highlights the report of the inspector general of the electoral justice, Minister Benedito Gonçalves.

BICENTENARY

Last year’s Independence Bicentennial celebrations also led to actions at the TSE. In one of the trials, the then candidacy of the PT indicates abuse of political and economic power and improper use of the media, considering that the September 7 celebration was financed with public funds and broadcast live on TV Brasil.

Together with Bolsonaro and general Braga Netto – candidate for vice president last year – 16 other people were accused, including pastor Silas Malafaia and businessman Luciano Hang. Another action filed by Senator Soraya Thronicke (União Brasil-MS) also calls for an electoral investigation into the alleged misuse of the September 7 commemoration. Bolsonaro and Braga Netto are the target of the action.

The two are still under investigation in three other allegations of abuse of political and economic power concerning the performance of the then president at the 77th UN General Assembly and in the retinue of the Queen of England.

‘SUGGESTIONS’

The TSE will resume Bolsonaro’s trial today. The centerpiece of this action is a meeting with ambassadors in which the then president questioned, without evidence, the fairness of the electoral process. Yesterday, in Sao Paulo, Bolsonaro said that “suggestions to improve the electoral system” cannot be considered an “attack on democracy”.

“Is it right to revoke the political rights of someone who has met the ambassadors? It’s not right to say: ‘He attacked democracy.’ Improve, seek, put layers of protection, that’s good for democracy,” he said.

The information comes from the newspaper The State of São Paulo.
