In theaters this Wednesday, June 28, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fortune, the fifth and final adventure in cinema’s most famous adventure, puts Harrison Ford on the trail of a new legendary artifact: the mythical Archimedes’ dial that must be. Its owner was allowed to find temporary cracks.
Orchestrated by James Mangold, this final chapter isn’t without inspiring some nostalgia, and fans of the first hour will be able to recognize some hints from the first four installments of the famous saga. Let’s take a look back at some of these memories that bring joy to the last adventure of Indiana Jones. Warning, spoilers!
SPOILER ALERT!
This slideshow reveals many more or less important elements in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, in theaters from Wednesday. If you haven’t seen it yet, I suggest you don’t continue reading.
on top of the train

If this fifth part takes place in 1969, the film opens with a flashback scenario set in 1944, where forty-year-old Indiana Jones is already trying to return the dial of fate to Nazi officer Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen).
An introduction that will no doubt remind fans of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in which a (younger) Indy also fights to retrieve a precious artifact on the roof of a train: at that time, the Coronado Cross.
Memoirs of Henry Jones

Indiana Jones, 80, is set to retire from New York as a professor of archeology at Hunter College.
If you look closely in his apartment, you will see a photo of Henry Jones Sr., the father of the adventurer played by Sean Connery, who helped him find the Grail. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Horse VS Engines

In the first part of the feature film, when Indiana Jones thought that he was entering a well-deserved retirement, he was visited by his godmother Helena Shaw, who takes him even though she is the last nanny.
In the midst of the Apollo 11 mission parade (which is happening at the same time), Indy must escape Waller’s men in midtown Manhattan. In the face of the latter’s cars and motorized vehicles, the adventurer rides on horseback, exactly as against Donovan’s tanks. The Last Crusade.
The return of Salah

Indy’s loyal companion on adventures, already in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last CrusadeThis Egyptian excavator, who faced many dangers with the archaeologist, is back in this fifth opus.
Years have passed for him too. Now living in a small New York apartment with his family – who Indy apparently helped bring over from Egypt – Salah offers him hospitality as he tries to outwit his pursuer.
Ophophobia

After he fell into a bin full of little snakes in the beginningIndiana Jones and the Last CrusadeThe famous adventurer has developed a true phobia of anything that crawls or ripples. From a tiny asp to a large anaconda, Indy hates all kinds of snakes, but constantly faces his greatest fear in every episode of the saga.
The fifth opus is, of course, no exception, except that here the traditional serpents have been replaced by a whirlpool nestling in the depths of the Greek waters. Frightened as usual, the adventurer unfortunately can’t tell the difference.
Cursed temple

When he enumerates to his godson all the dangers he has already endured during his rich career, Indiana Jones specifically specifies that he has “Given to the Goddess Kali” and that it has “Voodoo Torture”. The archeologist is apparently referring to his terrifying adventure in the cursed temple in the second part of the saga, during which he was captured and manipulated by an evil sect skilled in human sacrifice.
These are not cookies!

Another echo Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom In this fifth opus: a short sequence in which Indy and Elena, before reaching Archimedes’ tomb, cross a narrow corridor whose walls are covered with giant centipedes.
In the second part of the saga, accompanied by Demi-Lun and Will, the adventurer has indeed already explored a passage full of insects. What a naive impression to walk on strange dry cakes before he could light a torch.
Where doesn’t it hurt?

At the end of the feature film, once back in his New York apartment, Indiana Jones is surprised to find his wife Marion, who has refused to see him for several years.
The moving union of the two lovers directly refers to the famous scene Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which they traveled on a cargo ship after leaving Egypt. Injured, Indy refuses to treat Marion, who then asks her to show him the few places that don’t bother her so she can kiss him.
hat trick

In the final shot of the film, we can see Indy’s hand retrieving his precious fedora and drying it on the terrace of the apartment.
The gesture is now a saga symbol that the adventurer could renew in virtually all of his adventures and especially Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, at the end of the famous insect scene (which we mentioned earlier). As the walls of the ghastly trap closed behind him, he barely had time to reach out to grab his trusty hat.
