Idris Elba as James Bond: Rumors have been circulating for years. While it was an honor for him, the actor recently said (via Variety , according to ComingSoon ) that racist backlash over the idea caused him to lose interest in the project.

Speaking during a recent interview on the “SmartLess” podcast, Idris Elba He briefly addressed the rumours, stating for the first time that he had heard them and that it was a great compliment to him.

The truth is, it flattered me for a long time. I was like, “This is crazy!” James Bond… we are all actors and we understand the role. This is one of the preferred ones. When you’re asked to be James Bond, it’s like, “Okay, you’ve reached the top.” It’s one of those things that the whole world gets to vote on.

However, he added that while “most corners of the world” were excited about the idea, “certain corners” were not, and this eventually pushed the actor off the project.

Those who weren’t happy with the idea found it crude and unfortunate because it was all about race. It became stupid and I paid.

Whoever lands the role of the next James Bond must be prepared to take on enormous responsibilities and live up to their prestigious predecessors. Fans will have to wait a while to find out who the lucky guy will be and even longer to see him in action.

“There’s no script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reimagining of Bond.,” Barbara Broccoli, the franchise’s longtime producer, said last year. “We’re reinventing who he is, and that takes time. I would say the shoot will be at least two years away.“

Idris Elba is tired of catalogs

In the past, the actor has already spoken publicly about his frustration at being labeled a “black actor”. In an interview with Esquire UK in February, he admitted that he stopped qualifying as such because it limited his career.

“As humans, we are obsessed with race, and this obsession can really hinder people’s aspirations, hinder people’s growth. Racism should certainly be a topic of discussion. Racism is very real. But from my point of view, he’s only as strong as you let him be,“- he said.

“I stopped describing myself as a black actor when I realized it put me in a box. We have to grow up. We have to. Our skin is nothing more: it is just skin. The diatribe is over.“
