Pending bill proposes the inclusion of Pix as a payment option in municipal public transport
The Municipality of Porto Alegre is analyzing a bill that intends to make the Pix payment option mandatory on city buses and crowds. Proposed by Councilor Gilson Padeiro (PSDB), the project underlines the importance of ensuring that toll companies and municipal public transport permits ensure users the convenience of paying fare through Pix.
The project stipulates that payment via Pix must be available to all users, regardless of the operating system of their smartphones or the financial institution used, provided that it is approved by the Central Bank of Brazil. Also, the project prohibits the charging of additional fees on payment. According to councilor Padeiro, the initiative aims to make life easier for users, eliminating the need to carry cash or worry about change when paying the fare.
The Pix instant payment system already has more than 149 million users and 613.7 million keys registered in the Central Bank’s Directory of Transactional Account Identifiers (DICT). Since its launch in late 2020, Pix has gained market share, accounting for 29% of all recorded transactions in 2022, up from 16% a year earlier. This payment method has contributed to the digitization of financial transactions in Brazil, providing inclusion and accessibility to people who did not download before. The Central Bank points out that, in just two years of activity, Pix has become the medium with the highest annual number of transactions in the country.
