After portraying French life in Lisbon in his first short film, Ruben Alves explores the relationship between France and Portugal once again in his first feature film, La Cage Dorée.
He is particularly inspired by his own parents’ journey to portray the main characters Maria and José Ribeiro. This couple of Portuguese expats are single-minded in their beautiful Paris neighborhood. They are so valued that no one wants to bring them back to Portugal!
Awarded the People’s Prize at the Alpe d’Huez Festival, this heartwarming family chronicle of uprooting stands out for being so thick with clichés and relying on an impeccable Franco-Portuguese cast. Among them are Chantal Laub, Joaquim de Almeida, Rita Blanco and Maria Vieira, an extremely popular actress in her country who did not speak French before filming.
When it came out in 2013, Golden cage Attracts 1.2 million moviegoers. It is also the most successful French film in Portugal, with over 700,000 admissions.
