Despite a clearly nervous first half, Gui was one of the highlights of the match.
Starting off the Golden State Warriors’ California Summer League debut, Brazilian Gui Santos made a strong start despite the loss to the Sacramento Kings, the team hosting the tournament. With a good selection of three-pointers, Gui was the team’s second-highest scorer, with 19 points on the night.

The first three points of the game went to Gui, who received a good pass from Podziemski, free on the perimeter. But the first half was a bit disappointing. Soon after, a very good infiltration by Keegan Murray ended with a good dunk on Gui. With an apparent nervousness, the winger had problems with the ball in his hands in the infiltrations, in the conducts or in the simple dribbling of the ball.

Despite this, Gui showed good off-the-ball movement in attack, which yielded another good three-point shot from the same region in the second quarter, and also went to the free throw line three times, without mistakes. In defence, some mistakes in marking exchanges left some players free. But with three rebounds and two assists, Gui’s first half started positively.

The second-half comeback brought a much more confident and more similar player to the one he demonstrated during the G-League season, where he defended Golden State’s affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. With tighter ball control and more confidence carrying the ball, Gui created some good plays that didn’t translate into points, but he grabbed an assist after finding infiltration Jayce Johnson in a near-lost possession.

In the last seconds of the third quarter, after receiving the ball from Lester Quinones, Gui hit a beautiful shot floating from the free throw line to cut the Sacramento lead to seven as the fourth quarter began. The three ball also fell, in another well grab and shoot from the same region as his other successful shots, with another pass from Lester Quinones.
Gui Santos’ good debut can also be seen in the numbers. Despite starting down, Gui was the Warriors’ player with the most minutes on the field, with 29:56, he was the team’s second-highest scorer, with 19 points, behind only Lester Quinones with 26, the second with the most share of rebounds, with 5, one fewer than Brandin Podziemski, picked 19 in that year’s draft.
