The Voltalia solar park in Rio Grande do Norte begins producing energy for Copel

Plant is one of the largest renewable energy complexes in the world and opens the space for green hydrogen projects

RIO – Voltalia, producer of renewable energy and industry services provider, announced this Monday the injection of the first megawatts of SSM3-6, a 260 megawatt (MW) solar farm located in the great northern river, in the National Interconnected System (SIN). The energy will be sold at copel.

The SSM3-6 solar park (Solar Serra do Mel 3, 4, 5 and 6) is part of the Serra Branca Cluster, one of the largest renewable energy complexes in the world, with a capacity that can reach 2.4 gigawatts (GW ). It is located in a region that includes the municipalities of Serra do Mel and Areia Branca (RN). According to Voltalia, the new plant confirms the hybrid vocation of the park, which combines wind and solar generation. It also opens space for green hydrogen production projects in the state, the company noted.

The parks of the complex benefit from shared infrastructures (connection and access to the network) and operational synergies. The cluster is fully connected to the SIN through a 50 km long 500 kV transmission line. In Mossoró, a municipality bordering Serra Branca, Voltalia has also installed an Operations Centre, from which it manages all its wind power assets and customers around the world.

The construction of the solar park which starts to be delivered has now started in March 2022. The total capacity of 260 MW will be gradually commissioned in the coming months. This plant is supported by a 14-year electricity purchase agreement with Voltalia’s long-standing partner Copel.

“The new solar park in the Serra Branca Cluster is yet another confirmation of the competitive potential of the Brazilian Northeast as a generator of renewable energy for the whole country and of Voltalia’s ability to develop sustainable projects in Brazil”, declared the CEO by Voltalia Brasil, Robert Klein, in footnote. “We arrived in the region more than a decade ago and, during that time, we have built strong relationships with hundreds of landowners, we have approached partners, such as Copel, and we have generated jobs and social and economic development in the region. region.commitments that we have established by 2027?, he added.

In Brazil for over 15 years, where it has already invested 4 billion reais, Voltalia has more than 1.4 GW in operation and under construction in the country, with projects mainly located in the Serra Branca cluster, entirely developed by the company.

The company, present in 20 countries, recently signed a memorandum of understanding for studies on green hydrogen projects in Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará. The document establishes mutual cooperation to contribute to the development of a plant for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, green ammonia and e-methanol.
