Available on Netflix, Funny features four young comedians dreaming of entering the world of stand-up comedy. Going on stage, undressing and making the audience laugh … is not an easy exercise for actors and actresses in a TV series.
Funny they are funny. Each in turn and in its own way, when standing on stage, brings out this part of the magic: provoking laughter. “That was the hardest part. There was an extra layer along with the stand. We had to find our heroes on stage. Concrete preparation
He explains to our colleagues that he watched videos of proven comedians, including Gad Elmaleh – who gave Fanny Herrero the idea for the series – Jamel Debussy, but also American Ali Wong. Jean Xuan even preferred to take inspiration from no one specifically. “Bling is a creature. I did not want to work with facial expressions. There is no such neurotic comedian in France“- says the actor.
Elsa Gued, who plays the role of Apollin, in turn admits that the small team trained on their feet in real conditions: “We worked with Shirley Swanion at the Barbès Comedy Club. We did the secret series that we arranged for us. We played as if we were really comedians. We trained there“
A script that appealed to Younes Bucif, a translator of Nezir, who might have been a little better prepared for the scene than his comrades because of his rapper status. “It was a new exercise that was not obvious, but ultimately more exciting than stressful. liked“- he added for his part.
Several professionals – Shirley Swanion, Lison Danielle, Fanny Ruvet, Marina Rolman and Jason Brokers – were surrounded by a funny team, from writing to casting, to make the exercise as compelling as possible. Mission complete.
