Is there a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody? Brian May responds

Guitarist defended that the film about Queen would never get a second part; now, however, speech seems to have changed

Who watched the movie Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), biopic about the Queen box office champion, certainly wouldn’t imagine a sequel. After all, the work is concluded with the presentation at the Live Aid in 1985 – and after the end of the following year, the band would enter a rather reclusive mode of activity, as the vocalist Freddie Mercury deal with the spread of AIDS.

The singer died on November 24, 1991, aged 45. Though he has remained productive, releasing two albums with Queen and an album with the opera singer Montserrat Caballé, he did not perform concerts between 1987 and the year of his death. As such, it would be difficult to find a good story to tell in a sequel, which would tackle the post-1985 period.

Despite this, it seems that the remaining members of the band are willing to accept this challenge – in particular Brian May. The guitarist had previously said that Bohemian Rhapsody would not win a second film. Now, however, the discourse has changed.

In an interview with the journalist Eddie Trunk (via blabbermouth), the musician left the door open for a new feature. Even though he recognizes the difficulty of continuing a project of this type, he understands that there is indeed a story to be told.

“It is true that we talked about it [sequência]. We would love, we would really love to do a sequel. It’s a matter of finding the right script. In fact, it took us 12 years to find the right script for the first movie, so it’s no surprise that it wasn’t easy. There’s a story there – a lot happened after the end of the script for the first movie.”

May, on the other hand, recognized that perhaps this plot is not enough to yield a second feature film. And the guitarist only wants to work on a new work if, in fact, it’s worth it.

“Whether that would make a movie, I don’t know. And we don’t want to do that unless we’re sure it’s going to work and it’s going to move people in the same way that the original movie did. Anyway, the short answer is: we’d love to do it, but we haven’t found a way yet.”

same cast

One of the main conditions for Brian May to accept making a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody is the maintenance of the cast. Not only Rami Malekwho won a oscar in Best Actor for work as Freddie Mercury, but the whole gang: Gwilym Lee like the guitarist himself, ben hardy like the drummer roger taylor It is Joe Mazzello like the bass player john deaconin addition to Lucy Boynton in the role of mary austinex-fiancée and great friend of the singer.

“It would be nice to have the same four guys back to do it with us because they are so great, all of them. They are simply great. I mean, Rami is amazing. Gwilym, who played me, is amazing. You know, he even cheated on my kids. My kids thought I voiced him in character, but he did it all.”
