Operation Portugal will continue! Comedian D’Jalle, famous for his sketch of the Portuguese, will resume shooting July 24, with Frank Cimieri again directing. Both will sign the script of this second part together. Nothing is known about its contents at this time.
For reference, Operation Portugal was a huge success (over 450,000 admissions) in June 2021, during a difficult time for cinema attendance.
Operation Portugal’s first opus follows 35-year-old Hakim, a friendly neighborhood cop of Moroccan descent. He must infiltrate Portuguese society for investigative purposes. But can you become Portuguese in three days?
Especially when you know Hakeem is a walking nuisance in the mix. His clumsiness and misfortune transform his numerous initiatives into cataclysms. The suit is obviously too big for her!
Hakeem, who lives alone with his mother, is quickly torn between his feelings and his mission, discovering a community but also a family.
This first feature film was inspired by the great success of this comedian of the Jamel Comedy Club, Sketch Portuguese, a series that was especially noticed thanks to the Marrakesh laugh. The video for this sketch (which can be seen at 3 minutes of 58 in the player above) has amassed 20 million views on YouTube.
As director Frank Cimieri explains, “This project was born in D’Jalle’s head, and his head is a mess, a thousand ideas per second. He took this Portuguese character and came up with the idea of putting him in the position of an undercover cop. Which fits him like a glove.
My role in the beginning was to organize all his ideas and tell the story. With characters we believe in.”
The release date of this sequel is not yet known. Meanwhile, what’s in store for French movies this summer? We tell you everything!
Operation Portugal 2 is produced by Moana Films and distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment France.
