Apparently Tom Cruise was supposed to be convinced to make Top Gun: Maverick, and director Joseph Kosinski shares his epic speech.

Slight spoilers for Top Gun: Maverick He’s waiting for us, so read at your own risk.

After a long journey to the silver screen, Top Gun: Maverick it has finally arrived and is making a serious noise. The film was a box office success (even though he didn’t get a release in China ), same giving Tom Cruise the best opening weekend ever . Critics also praised the aerial sequences. and Cruise’s performance, among others. With all of this in mind, some may be surprised to learn that the actor initially didn’t want to do the sequel. Now director Joseph Kosinski has revealed his epic tone for it.

Joseph Kosinski seems to have had a strong desire to revive the character of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and eventually got Jerry Bruckheimer. The veteran producer was happy with Kosinski’s idea but, of course, he had to do the franchise. As explained by the director Vulture They set up a meeting with him, though Kosinski only realized closer to the conversation that the actor had no interest in returning to the franchise:

When I started, Tom Cruise didn’t want to do the movie, which I found out later. It all started almost exactly five years ago. Jerry Bruckheimer sent me a first draft they were working on and wanted my input. I gave him my opinion. He liked it and said, “You have to introduce him directly to Tom.” Jerry and I flew to Paris, where Tom was filming Mission, and spent half an hour there. What I didn’t realize was that Tom didn’t want to make another Top Gun. I got a clue when Tom called me after I landed. He said, ‘Joe, thanks for coming. Whatever happens, it will be a pleasure to see you despite everything. And I was like, Oh wait, he doesn’t want to do this.

This development must have been somewhat surprising for the Only the brave manager at that time. However, he had an advantage in the situation, as he and actor Maverick had already made a film (Forgotten) and had established a solid working relationship. From there, Joseph Kosinski was able to launch his story of him, and from his description of that fateful encounter, he did it in a very passionate and epic way, which ended up hooking Tom Cruise:

But having already made a movie with him, I knew I had to have it emotionally. So I started with the idea that this was a rite of passage story like the first movie. The first film is a drama, albeit encapsulated in this brilliant action film. It would be the same thing, but it would be Maverick reconciling with Goose’s son against this mission that would take them both deep into enemy territory. And as soon as I said that, I could see the wheels in his head start spinning. Then I pitched the idea of Dark Star, the opening sequence, what Maverick does when we find him. Which I think was also important because Maverick is still Maverick, but he’s not buzzing around the local airbase tower. He is at the forefront of aviation, pushing boundaries as always. But he is alone. It is only at the beginning of this film. Then I practically talked about shooting, and obviously Tom agrees 100% with all of this. And then the title. I said we can’t call it Top Gun 2. We have to call it Top Gun: Maverick, a story of a character. So he pulled out his phone, called the Paramount boss and said, “We’re doing a Top Gun sequel.” And it was boom, green light.

How can you disagree with the film after hearing a long, detailed speech like that? You have to love a director who knows what he wants and how he wants to make it all happen. And it cannot be underestimated how impressive it is that he managed to persuade Tom Cruise to buy. The actor seems to be very particular about the productions he has chosen in recent years, although most of them come from other legacy sequels. Congratulations again to Joseph Kosinski for moving forward, despite the actor’s obvious hesitation.

Interestingly, there are even more grandiose aspects of the film that the director didn’t even mention when he detailed his presentation. There is the shirtless football scene, during which the the actors got to show off their well-deserved abs . And, of course, there’s the poignant reunion between Maverick and Iceman, performed by the return of Val Kilmer. It is noteworthy that the director previously revealed himself to ourselves ReelBlend podcast who Kilmer contributed greatly creating this scene.

In short, Joseph Kosinski (and his numerous collaborators, of course) deserve a lot of gratitude from best gun Fans. Not only have they made a sequel that honors the original film, but they’ve also created a film that is now a perfect way to kick off the successful summer season. So let it be a lesson, folks. When looking for something you are passionate about, don’t be put off by obstacles, even if one of them is Tom Cruise.
