The timeless comedy hosted by Thierry Lhermitte and Jacques Villeret, Le Dîner de Cons, is broadcast tonight on TF1. Far from Marvel and Pixar’s feature films, which are often shrouded in hidden details, Francis Webber’s feature still hides a little surprise, provided you know where to look for it.
Indeed, this classic of the genre, which we are more accustomed to quoting for its memorable scenes and its iconic lines, also contains a small Easter egg for the attention of the most observant viewers. This wink, which can be seen at almost any time during the film, since the latter takes place almost entirely in one room, is an element of decor.
For example, at 14 minutes and 37 seconds, press the “pause” button on the remote control, when Pierre Broschan, sitting on the sofa due to back pain, greets François Pignon, who has just arrived at his apartment.
At this moment, take a close look at the two books placed on the coffee table in front of Thierry Lhermitte. On the edge of the other you can read (upside down) the name “POIRET”.
If the last name were spelled differently, one would think it was a reference to Jean-Marie Poirier, the director of Santa Claus is Garbage, in which Lermitte already starred, but it is not.
This book is actually Francis Weber’s tribute to his friend, the screenwriter Jean Poiret, who died six years before Le Dîner de cons, and who notably helped him adapt La Cage aux Folles for the cinema. Also an actor and director, Poiret also starred in films such as The Atlantic Wall, The Last Subway or Chicken in Vinegar. At the end of his life he also created Le Zèbre, still with Thierry Lhermite.
