Barbie: social networks explode with the first reactions; I wait!

A few hand-picked people got a glimpse into Barbie’s world on Sunday Night (09). And social networks exploded with reactions.

The lucky ones saw the long-awaited film of the same name by Greta Gerwig, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, at its world premiere. The ceremony took place over the weekend.

‘Barbie’: first impressions

To begin with, Joseph Deckelmeier, writing for ScreenRant, called the film “funny, stilted, and highly intelligent.”

“’Barbie’ caught me off guard and I mean that in the best possible way. She is funny, bombastic and very intelligent. Greta Gerwig aims for fences and hits a home run. Margot Robbie’s performance is fantastic and Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu are pure entertainment! The whole cast is amazing!

Perri Nemiroff, writing for Collider, praised the technical side of the film, especially the costumes and set design. In regards to the plot, he wrote that it is conflicted.

“I saw ‘Barbie’! The production is amazing. In particular, the costume design and set design include top-notch work that goes a long way towards creating the feeling that these are really Barbies, their dream homes and worlds come to life.

As for the story, this is where I’m a little torn. I think the film serves Margot Robbie’s Barbie and her journey particularly well, but there are other characters who are having major arcs that needed more screen time to really explore them to their fullest.”

Jamie Jirak of ComicBook.com called the film his “favorite of the year”. He wrote that Greta Gerwig, the film’s director, exceeded her expectations of her and that Ryan Gosling deserves an Oscar nomination.

“I can’t officially leave Twitter before telling everyone that ‘Barbie’ is currently my favorite movie of the year. Greta Gerwig somehow exceeded my expectations. She deals with the positives and negatives of Barbie so beautifully. Give Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination, I mean it!

Showrunner Sharronda Williams called the film “smart, heartfelt, and utterly funny,” especially praising Gosling for stealing scenes and “provoking more laughs.”

“’Barbie’ is sometimes smart, sincere and downright funny. Ryan Gosling is a scene-stealer, providing the most laughs, while Margot Robbie’s heartfelt performance will tug at your heartstrings. While I enjoyed most of the movie, the script feels bloated at times.

Variety social media editor Katcy Stephan called the film “perfection”. She praised Greta Gerwig’s direction and said Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were “born for the roles”.

“Greta Gerwig offers a subtle commentary on what it’s like to be a woman in a fun, wonderful, entertaining game. The entire cast shines, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in roles they were clearly born to play.

Starring Robbie as the iconic Barbie and Gosling as his toy Ken, the film has a strong cast (most of whom play different versions of the famous dolls). Notable names in the cast include: Dua Lipa, Simu Liu and John Cena.

“Barbie” also stars America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, Jamie Demetriou and Emerald Fennell.
