The ‘The Good Doctor’ actor is set to run for US Senator

Actor Hill Harper, who plays Dr. Marcus Andrews in the series “The Good Doctor”, has announced his candidacy for the US Senate, intending to fill the open seat in Michigan. The actor will run for the Democratic nomination, in a direct clash with US Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin.

In an interview with the Associated Press prior to the announcement, Harper, a home and bar owner in Detroit, described himself as a small business owner, union member and activist. He also stated that not being a “career politician” would give him an edge in Congress. “It’s not about the party. It’s about people feeling represented,” Harper said. “And being an independent voice in the United States Senate is something I think Michiganders want right now.”

The Democratic nomination for a Senate seat in Michigan will be contested by several candidates, including state board of education member Pamela Pugh and former state representative Leslie Love.

Celebrity trends in politics

Harper’s candidacy marks the continuation of a decades-long trend of artists entering politics. Since the election of Ronald Reagan as Governor of California in 1967 and later President of the United States, several celebrities have followed suit.

Some nominations have been quixotic, such as singer Clay Aiken’s unsuccessful congressional campaigns in 2014 and 2022, or Cynthia Nixon’s bid for New York governor in 2018. However, other showbiz personalities, including actors, singers, comedians and public figures, have achieved success.

Hollywood politicians include Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was governor of California from 2003 to 2011, former wrestler Jesse “The Body” Ventura, who was governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003, and singer Sonny Bono, who was congressman from 1994 until his death in 1998 .

Harper’s career in entertainment

Harper’s television career spanned over 30 years. She has appeared in series such as ‘City of Angels’, ‘CSI: NY’, ‘Covert Affairs’, ‘Limitless’ and ‘Homeland’. Since 2017 he has played the role of Dr. Marcus Andrews in the medical drama ‘The Good Doctor’. With the Senate bid, it’s likely he’ll leave the cast of the series to focus on the election.

In politics, the actor has been an avid supporter of Barack Obama in both of his presidential campaigns, having been Obama’s classmates at Harvard Law School. In 2012, Obama nominated Harper to a presidential cancer judging panel.

The actor wrote about his battle with thyroid cancer in the book ‘The Wealth Cure: Putting Money In Its Place’. He is also the author of other books including “Letters to a Young Brother” and “Letters to a Young Sister”. Harper is also the founder of the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation.
