“Why Marvel, why?” : The death of this Secret Invasion character puts fans in PLS

Warning, this article contains spoilers for the first four episodes of Secret Invasion.

Secret Invasion continues to stream on Disney+. This Thursday, July 12, the platform released episode 4 online, in which Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) finds himself in a delicate situation. He discovers that his wife is having an affair with Gravik. Rhodes (Don Cheadle), who is indeed a Skrull as some fans have guessed, then asks him to destroy the former SHIELD agent under penalty of being executed himself. But Priscilla doesn’t agree…

Fury, having already realized that he had nothing to do with the real War Machine in the restaurant scene, decides to tail him. Gravik then launches an attack against the President of the United States pretending to be the Russian army. Talos and Fury intervene to save the Head of State, but Talos is mortally wounded by the Skrull leader… Nick makes the difficult choice to leave him behind to get the President to safety.

This is the second time the Secret Invasion writers have killed off a fan-favorite character (after Maria Hill in the first episode). And this death is particularly poignant because the character played by Ben Mendelsohn was lovable. Witness this series of tweets culled from the social network this morning:

“Couldn’t they kill Thalos like that? Right when he and Gia broke up on bad terms. Why Marvel, why?”

“I saw this coming for Talos, but it’s too bad”

“The episode was too short. When was it really a screw-up, the conversion between Fury and Priscilla, and now Talos is dead??? I’m sick of it all!”

“I woke up at 3am to see Thalo killed. I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

With two episodes left in its first season, Secret Invasion tightens its tone. Fury discovers in this episode that Gravik has created super-soldiers and that they are therefore almost invisible (aside from being undetectable). Therefore, the task promises to be difficult for him, now that he finds himself alone in this swamp. Unless he can count on the help of Giah, who used the machine to gain power…
