The boss of the AlphaTauri team had already explained even before the departure of De Vries that this was not a time for young people
Nyck de Vries’ departure caused a sensation, but not only that: Daniel Ricciardo’s departure to replace him also surprised many, after all Red Bull has an academy with many young drivers and AlphaTauri itself ends up having the characteristic of being a talent development team.
Franz Tost, head of the AlphaTauri team, had already given indications on what move to make during the Austrian GP. He told Motorsport.com that young drivers are currently not ready to clinch a title spot:
“At the moment we don’t have young prospects available. Some are arriving: Iwasa is doing a good job, Hadjar himself, but it’s a bit early for them. If De Vries improves, we won’t make any changes. It’s all in his hands, otherwise we will evaluate another solution,” he said at the time.
In this way, Daniel Ricciardo ended up winning the occasion and according to the information of the journalists following Red Bull, the Australian driver won the vacant seat a lot for his impressive performance in the Silverstone tests, which satisfied Horner, chief of the parent team, Red Toro.
For the Hungarian GP, Ricciardo will be an AlphaTauri driver and will have his chance to prove he can still be a driver in F1. The task, however, will not be easy for the Australian. For comparison, Yuki Tsunoda has only scored two points this season and the Italian team is experiencing one of the worst moments in its history.
