Bad news for Grantchester fans: Tom Britney, who has played Pastor Will Davenport since 2019, will be leaving the English series at the end of Season 9, which has just started filming. The actor wants to focus on new projects.
The series producer Masterpiece has already revealed the name of his replacement. So it will be Rishi Nair (Hollyoaks) who will have the difficult task of slipping away from a charismatic new pastor named Alfie Cotteram.
“I’ve had some amazing times playing Will Davenport over the past five years.“, Tom Britney said in a statement.I was able to work with my best friend, work with the best actors and the best team. I will miss you. But it’s time to pass on the baton, as it has for me, and I’m delighted that Rishi will be joining the Grantchester family.“
A sentiment shared by Rishi Nair, who declared himself “Excitedto join the series. “The welcome and support I received was extraordinary. I can’t wait to get started and can’t wait for Grantchester fans to meet Alfie and find out what the writers have in store for him.”
While PBS has yet to confirm how many Season 9 episodes Tom Britney will appear in, there’s a good chance his departure will take place during a double episode that will open the season in which he’ll share scenes with Rishi Nair.
Will first appeared in the first episode of Season 4, which aired in 2019. He crosses paths with Sidney Chambers (played by James Norton), Grantchester’s original pastor, during a lecture on the role of religion in the civil rights struggle.
At the end of this double episode, Sidney decided to go to the United States after falling in love with the daughter of an Alabama reverend who was in England for a conference. So Will took his place and helped Geordi investigate.
Season 8 of Grantchester began broadcasting in the UK on Sunday 9th July. However, French fans will have to wait to discover Tom Britney’s final season as Season 7 is still unreleased in France.
