Recovered from injuries and morale high, Ruan Oliveira talks about “making history” for Corinthians

Midfielder Ruan Oliveira is a pleasant surprise in Corinthians season. After undergoing three knee surgeries, the player has established himself as a regular for the team and is already planning to “make history” in the black and white shirt.

The 23-year-old joined Corinthians in 2019 on loan from Metropolitano. After good under-20 performances, the midfielder caught the eye of manager Tiago Nunes in 2020 and had his first professional chances, until he ruptured a ligament in his left knee.

A year later, on the verge of recovery, Ruan underwent a new procedure in the region. In June 2022, the youngster suffered a new ligament tear in his left knee, having to renew his loan with Corinthians until June 30 this year.

Despite the complicated recent history, Ruan Oliveira has ensured that he is physically fit to help Timão. Not surprisingly, the athlete has participated in six of the team’s last eight games, five of which as a starter.

“I’m fine, of course I do all the necessary work to not feel anything anymore, it’s a normal thing, but physically I’m fine and this sequence of games in such a short time demonstrates my state and how fine I am” I prepared myself to be able to take advantage these opportunities when they presented themselves,” said the athlete in an exclusive interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

It is no coincidence that Ruan Oliveira gains space with Luxemburgo at Corinthians. The player performed well in training and satisfied the experienced coach, who is known for giving opportunities to young athletes

“It was great to be able to play again and this sequence was great. I was preparing to be ready when opportunities arose, they came and I tried to help as best I could. I started or joined, and it happened, today I already feel much better, I have the trust of the whole group and also of the coaching staff” said the midfielder who has two goals and one assist in six games this season.

His good game and day-to-day performances earned Ruan an extension on his loan deal until the end of the season. The player doesn’t hide from anyone that he wants to stay at the club and that he feels very good in the Alvinegro shirt.

“We had the renewal until the end of the year and we’ll talk about it later. I leave (to buy) to my managers the task of dealing with the club and at the right moment I know it will happen. My wish is to stay and do the history with this shirt, I feel very good at Corinthians and I’m living a moment that I’ve been looking for for many years” commented Ruan.

This Saturday, Corinthians have a decisive match for the rest of the season. The team led by Luxembourg receives América-MG, at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil. Not surprisingly, Ruan Oliveira considers this match the most important of his professional career.

“Being a knockout match for such an important competition, I think it’s the most particular match, yes. They all have their importance, but when it comes to deciding a place in a decisive phase like the semi-final, or when it comes to when there is a title at stake there is always a higher expectation from everyone who participates and also from those who follow,” he said.

“This is our goal, to go forward. We know that América-MG is a great team, they have shown it in recent years, but we have to affirm support at home, our growth in recent matches, look for victory and start with classification,” he added.

Corinthians lost the first leg 1-0 in Belo Horizonte and must win with at least two goals difference to advance to the semi-finals of the national tournament.

Timão’s lineup for the comparison is still unknown. In addition to the uncertainty of the starting lineup, Luxa has varied between using a formation with three defenders and the traditional 4-3-3. Ruan understands that he is at ease in the two formations proposed by the coach.

“The team’s style of play changes, so it turns out that each player acts differently too. But everything is trained, so everyone knows what to do and how to do it regardless of the system. They perform both functions, also because they are very similar, ” he concluded.
