Ramón Cugar says players shouldn’t think about surgery and underlines Suarez’s professionalism
Barcelona doctor Ramón Cugar has ruled out the need for surgery on Gremio forward Luis Suárez’s right knee. Even with the player having been living with a site problem in recent weeks, the Spanish professional said in an interview with Uruguayan newspaper Telenoche that athletes shouldn’t think about surgical procedures.
Cugar stressed that players should focus on training and playing on the soccer field, not in the operating room. He warned of the importance of athletes being well prepared to enter the field and not trying to play to regain fitness. Furthermore, the doctor praised Suárez, highlighting him as an exemplary professional and a phenomenon of nature, just like Messi.
While he didn’t go into detail about the specific problem afflicting Suarez, Cugar said the 36-year-old is a top professional and made the decision not to travel to Barcelona to see his trusted doctor.
Following Grêmio’s standings for the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, manager Renato Portaluppi confirmed Suárez will not travel to Spain and has preferred to stay in Brazil to heal the pain. The coach stressed that they are in constant communication with the player and that they will evaluate the painful situation in the coming days, given that the team’s next match is scheduled in 10 days.
