A good summer comedy

Looking for some new fun series to enjoy? Have you heard of the law of the fittest? Netflix has just released this new comedy with Michel Bouteau, inspired by his 2020 essay of the same name as the English series Survival of the Thickest. The series tells the story of Mavis Beaumont (Michelle Bouteau), a newly single, tall black woman trying to rebuild her life after a difficult breakup. That is, after the photographer surprised his wife in bed with the model.

Produced by A24, an independent production company known for its quality work (Moonlight, Midsommar or even Euphoria), The Law of Strongest is part of the tradition of auteur comedies that we can see on Showtime rather than HBO. Michel Bhutto’s free and honest tone is a real breath of fresh air. She makes her series an ode to body positivity, matching Lena Dunham’s Girls in that sense.

The 8-episode, 27-minute series is a mix of laughs, inappropriate situations, but it also touches on serious topics like body image, self-acceptance, and finding your tribe. Little known in France, Michel Bouteau is a really funny and talented actress. With a slight touch of eccentricity, she brings the spirit and humor that characterizes her as Mavis.

Mavis is a talented designer with a passion for fashion, but struggles to find her place in this world. And she notes that she has always struggled to succeed in the fashion industry because of her height. He moves into a new shared apartment and starts his own style business. Mavis also starts dating men again and quickly learns that many men are attracted to her. Whatever her size, she is sexy and desirable.

In The Law of the Strongest, we follow Mavis’ journey through the ups and downs of her single life, career and relationships. Along the way, she learns to accept her body and identity and finds supportive friends. We love the series for the story, certainly not groundbreaking, but well done, and for the main cast. And because it’s a real breath of fresh air.
