The feature film Batman Forever, which hit theaters in 1995, sees actor Jim Carrey take on the guise of one of Batman’s most famous foes, The Riddler. But did you know that another big name in American comedy almost played the bad guy in a DC Joel Schumacher movie?
In Interview with The Playlist websiteScreenwriter Akiva Goldsman reveals that it was Robin Williams who was originally supposed to portray this iconic villain. “I remember the extraordinary day when Joel Schumacher sent me to San Francisco to meet Robin”he says. “I spent the day in his kitchen with him, who kept telling me about the character.”
We’ll probably never know what Robin Williams had to say about The Riddler (also played by Paul Dano in Batman) but listening to Akiva Goldsman we can’t help but fantasize. “It was beyond genius”he mumbles. “It was like he opened his head and I saw the world falling apart. He was so beautiful. When I got home, Robin had left a message on my answering machine, my girlfriend was calling me back.”
Why didn’t Batman meet Robin Williams, who was also very close to playing in the Harry Potter saga? “Actually, Joel and Robin have never met”– says Goldsman. “Jim Carrey came, he was incredible, and then Tommy Lee Joneswho worked with Joel User, also joined the project. Everything naturally fell into place. And the result was fun, funny, extraordinary.”
Batman Forever, starring Val Kilmer as the superhero, has grossed over $336 million worldwide.
